Parks Cafe poetry reading, a poem for Paul
A door creaked open;
he could hear with his right ear.
And another;
he could feel it in the hollow of his back.
He coughed a loud cough
and the doors slammed shut.
A motorbike revved inside his head,
speeding around the wall of death,
then exited via his spine,
bouncing from vertebra to vertebra.
Fingers fidgeted, hands hummed hot.
Toes twitched and tapped the table leg.
He settled.
There was a noticable draft
as latches lifted and doors creaked wide
in ears, eyes, nose, mouth and finally
his heart, as words walked in.
I don't oil the hinges, he explained.
When something enters, I want to know about it.
